The DMK has officially initiated legal action following the circulation of a disparaging social media post targeting party president and Tamil Nadu leader M K Stalin. A formal criminal complaint has been filed with the police and the state’s cybercrime department regarding the allegedly defamatory material shared on the platform X. This legal move comes as political discourse online faces increasing scrutiny for the spread of misinformation.
Legal Action Against Defamatory X Post
The complaint was registered by S Natarajan, a 51-year-old resident of Chennai and a member of the DMK cadre. As confirmed by party spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai on June 17, the legal submission specifically targets the user operating the handle “Kanchipuram Vijay FaN” (@VfcKanchipuram). Reports indicate that this account is associated with supporters of the state Chief Minister, C Joseph Vijay.
According to the details provided in the complaint, the account published a post featuring an authentic image of M K Stalin alongside offensive Tamil expressions. The content made unsubstantiated claims regarding the leader's personal finances, asserting that he had secured private loans for which he was personally responsible. Furthermore, the post accused the current administration under Stalin’s leadership of plunging the state into significant debt, effectively labeling the government and its supporters as fiscally irresponsible.
The petitioner, S Natarajan, explicitly stated that these assertions lack any credible evidence or verifiable documentation. He described the publication as a calculated effort to distribute misinformation, tarnish the public reputation of the political leader, and deliberately mislead the general public. The complaint further notes that the inflammatory content has been disseminated widely across various digital platforms, including WhatsApp groups and Telegram channels, resulting in substantial reputational damage.
Request for Investigation and Content Removal
In his petition to the authorities, Natarajan has formally requested that a First Information Report (FIR) be registered immediately to investigate the matter. The primary objectives are to successfully identify the individuals behind the handle, ensure the prompt removal of the offensive content from all digital spaces, and secure all relevant digital evidence to support subsequent legal proceedings.
This incident underscores the ongoing tensions between political factions and the growing concerns regarding the misuse of social media platforms to circulate defamatory information. As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to evaluate the potential violations of cyber safety regulations and the impact of such malicious posts on public sentiment. The legal team representing the DMK remains focused on preserving the integrity of the party leadership in the face of these digital allegations.
