Sydney: Australian cricketer Pat Cummins has expressed hesitation about participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) next season. He cites a pressing need to focus on preparing for upcoming Tests—the first at home against Bangladesh in August, followed by 21 Test matches within 12 months.

Challenges Ahead

With tough away assignments lined up against South Africa, India, and England, Cummins believes he might need a break before the decisive Ashes series next year. A full five-match Test series in India could pose significant physical strain.

Cummins shared: "Something has got to give at some stage next year and it is not going to be Test matches or an ODI World Cup." His decision, to be made closer to the IPL start date, aligns with his priorities—first and foremost on the Tests and winning the 2027 ODI World Cup.

"I will make a call a lot closer and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. Things can change," he added.

Ageing Pace Trios Management

Managing the pacing of ageing pace bowlers Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood is a concern. Cummins hinted at potentially resting them during critical periods such as late in an Indian series or before the Ashes.

"Yeah, it is possible. I think we are fairly open-minded to anything," he stated, elaborating that they might even consider resting certain bowlers midway through an Indian tour if they show signs of fatigue, thus ensuring readiness for the hard-hitting Ashes matches.

Cummins, who played just one Test against England after last year's World Test Championship final, feels rejuvenated and optimistic: "It is going to be a big push the next 18 months or so, but I think we will look back on it hopefully and see it as one of the more rewarding periods of our career."

The upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup adds additional layer of pressure. As Australia gear up for major domestic fixtures before overseas tours, Cummins must navigate this complex calendar.
