Chennai: On Monday, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay honored the young prodigy R. Praggnanandhaa by presenting him a cash incentive of Rs 50 lakh for his historic win at the Norway Chess tournament.
Vijay's recognition ceremony took place in front of a star-studded audience, including Praggnanandhaa's parents, Minister Aadhav Arjuna, and J. Meghanatha Reddy, member secretary of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT).
Chess Game with a Purpose
The event began with an exhibition game between Vijay and Praggnanandhaa, played on a large table in his office. The 20-year-old grandmaster showcased his expertise by outmaneuvering the seasoned politician, making strategic moves while fully focused.
Despite his political commitments, Chief Minister Vijay took the game seriously, moving pieces to defend his king as he rose from his seat. Praggnanandhaa's parents, along with key officials, observed this symbolic display of appreciation and support for the young champion's achievements.
The younger prodigy's triumph in Norway was particularly notable, marking a milestone as the first Indian player to win the prestigious title since its inception in 2013. Praggnanandhaa's victory underlines his immense talent in outperforming seasoned international players like Magnus Carlsen during critical matches.
