Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 8: Following the announcement of election results at the Kerala University, a heated clash erupted between supporters of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and those backing the Kerala Students Union (KSU). Disagreements over allegations of violence and property damage led to sustained confrontations that required extensive police intervention.

Violence Erupts During Celebratory March

The confrontation began during SFI's victory celebration march. According to the police, KSU supporters allegedly hurled stones at the procession, damaging a police vehicle and injuring an assistant sub-inspector (SHO) near his elbow. SFI leaders countered that KSU workers had attacked their group with similar weapons.

As tensions escalated, clashes spread onto the streets. Water cannons were deployed along with baton charges to disperse the crowds. Police registered an FIR against 10 SFI members and an unspecified number of others for causing damage worth approximately Rs 30,000 to a police vehicle.

A A Rahim, a Rajya Sabha MP representing the DYFI (Democratic Youth Federation), reported a "planned attack" by KSU activists on SFI supporters. He further criticized the police action for targeting SFI protesters engaging in peaceful acts instead of addressing those allegedly responsible for initiating violence.

Elections Retain Left Control

The Students' Federation of India, the student wing of the CPI(M), secured a resounding victory with 35 out of 37 seats. In contrast, the Congress-backed Kerala Students Union won just two seats in the election.

Initial celebrations turned tense outside university premises after incidents on the road intensified. Amidst ongoing clashes and increasing police presence, SFI activists reportedly obstructed officers from performing their duties by blocking roads until around 11:30 PM.
