Toronto: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for a new partnership with the United States, ahead of President Donald Trump's decision on whether to renew the free trade agreement between their countries. In a speech at the Economic Club of New York, Carney proposed a "true partnership" that reimagines cooperation in specific sectors challenged by global competition.

"Our core objective across these partnerships is to increase our strategic autonomy," Carney stated, referring to a world where integration has been weaponized. This sentiment comes at a time when Canada is diversifying its trade deals with dozens of countries worldwide and facing the potential impact of USMCA review.

Strategic Autonomy and Trade Diversification

In his remarks, Carney highlighted that while Canadian exports have been partially protected by tariffs under the USMCA, sectors like aluminum and steel face heavy tariffs. He underscored Canada's role as a significant supplier to the United States, emphasizing its energy and critical mineral contributions.

"At a time of a global energy crisis, Canada provides the United States with the reliable power and critical minerals that help fuel American growth: 99% of U.S. natural gas imports, 85% of electricity imports, and 60% of crude oil imports," Carney noted.

A key proposal from Carney is doubling Canada's non-U.S. exports within the next decade, aiming to counter economic pressures imposed by American tariffs.

"Canada Strong will help make America great again. The examples are legion where we should work together and compete with the world together," Carney added during his speech at the Economic Club of New York.

Building Mutual Dependency

Carney also pointed to the mutual dependency between Canada and the United States, noting that despite differences, they have always resolved issues through shared values and common interests. He highlighted Canada's role as America's largest customer, surpassing China, Japan, and Germany in goods purchases.

"When Canada and the United States have had our differences over the years, we have always — eventually — worked through them, because our shared values and common interests run deep," Carney said. This statement underscores the ongoing commitment to maintaining economic cooperation despite political tensions.

Dominic LeBlanc, Minister for U.S. Trade, is set to meet with representatives from major financial institutions in Washington next week, indicating sustained efforts to navigate upcoming trade challenges together.
