The state government has issued strict directives to expedite Bhongir Fort tourism development, setting a firm deadline of October 2 for the completion of ongoing infrastructure projects. Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao expressed significant frustration regarding the current pace of work during a recent official inspection of the project site.
The ambitious initiative, which falls under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme 2.0, is designed to transform the historic location into a world-class tourist hub. With a substantial budget allocation of ₹56.81 crore, the project encompasses the development of a ropeway system and various modern amenities intended to enhance the overall experience for visitors.
Enhancing Heritage and Tourism Infrastructure
During his review tour across Yadadri-Bhongir and Suryapet districts, Jupally Krishna Rao emphasized that the administration is prioritizing both heritage conservation and modern tourism growth. The government's broader tourism policy seeks to position Telangana as a premier destination, specifically focusing on fostering sustainable economic opportunities, increasing regional investment, and creating local employment.
Beyond the improvements at Bhongir Fort, the minister oversaw the laying of foundation stones for conservation efforts at the Phanigiri and Gajulabanda Buddhist heritage sites. Financial support for these projects is being provided through Telangana GENCO (YTPS) corporate social responsibility funds, with approximately ₹1.60 crore earmarked for Phanigiri and ₹23 lakh for Gajulabanda.
Recognizing the historical significance of Phanigiri, the minister announced an additional ₹5 crore investment to improve accessibility and visitor facilities, including new approach roads and stairway infrastructure for the hilltop complex. He highlighted that these excavations reveal a profound cultural legacy that has the potential to draw both domestic and international interest.
Modernizing Spiritual Landmarks
In addition to historical site conservation, the state is moving forward with plans for the Sri Someswara Swamy Temple in Kolanupaka. This site is slated for development into a 'Smart Temple' featuring modern facilities, with an allocated budget of ₹5 crore, ensuring that the necessary upgrades do not detract from the landmark's inherent heritage character.
The overall state strategy focuses on a destination-based model, integrating spiritual centers, ancient monuments, and significant Buddhist sites into thematic tourism circuits. The inspection was attended by several local dignitaries, including MLA Kumbham Anil Kumar Reddy, MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, Government Whip Beerla Ilaiah, and Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director Gauthami, all of whom discussed the long-term potential for growth in the region.
