Ahead of a critical announcement, the state of Assam has introduced a significant step with the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. This move was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 1, 2026, marking a new era of payroll reforms in the state.
The objective of the 8th Pay Commission is to evaluate and enhance the pay scales, allowances, and service conditions of state government employees. However, it will not extend to All India Services and certain technical institutions, ensuring the exclusion of over seven lakh employees and pensioners from the review process.
Subhash Chandra Das has been appointed as the President of the 8th Assam Pay Commission 2026. Alongside, senior officials from various departments will participate as members, forming a comprehensive panel to oversee the review process.
Additionally, the Commission aims to take into account the state's economic situation, fiscal discipline, and developmental priorities while proposing feasible adjustments to the pay scales. The Commission's headquarters will be set up in Guwahati, ensuring a swift and efficient review process within a year.
