Highlights

  • APTransco commissioned a 160 MVA transformer at the Undi 220 KV substation.
  • The upgrade provides a permanent solution to recurring power overloading and low-voltage issues.
  • The new infrastructure supports approximately 200,000 people and thousands of agricultural and aquaculture connections.
  • Improved stability will benefit power networks in the Razole and Mummidivaram regions as well.

The Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation (APTransco) has successfully bolstered the regional electrical infrastructure by commissioning a robust 160 MVA power transformer at the Undi 220 KV substation. This strategic development is designed to significantly enhance the reliability and distribution capacity of power throughout the West Godavari district, addressing long-standing supply challenges for a vast number of consumers.

Previously, the Undi substation operated using only three power transformers. However, as the region experienced a marked increase in electricity demand across industrial, agricultural, and domestic sectors—particularly during the peak summer season—the existing infrastructure struggled to keep pace. The rising load frequently forced authorities to implement emergency power relief measures, which involved cutting 50 to 60 MW of power daily between 8:00 PM and 11:00 PM to protect the grid from overloading.

Improving Regional Power Infrastructure Stability

The newly installed equipment, designated as PTR-4, represents a major upgrade for the local grid. Government officials highlighted that the project was completed in an expedited 17-day timeframe to provide a swift resolution to systemic low-voltage issues and persistent overloading that had burdened the local population and regional economy. By strengthening the substation, APTransco aims to ensure a consistent and uninterrupted electricity supply for all stakeholders.

The technical capacity of the new 160 MVA transformer is extensive, capable of serving the energy needs of approximately two lakh residents. Furthermore, the upgrade is expected to support the operational requirements of nearly 32,000 agricultural pump sets—each with a 5 HP capacity—as well as roughly 30,000 power connections tailored for aquaculture, a critical industry in the region. This added capacity provides a scalable and sustainable solution for the district's energy demands.

Beyond the immediate benefits to West Godavari, the increased capacity at the Undi substation serves a broader purpose. By stabilizing the primary supply point, the installation is expected to reduce overall stress on the wider electrical network. This improvement will consequently enhance the stability and operational efficiency of power distribution in neighbouring areas, specifically Razole and Mummidivaram. This technical intervention marks a significant step forward in optimizing the region's energy management and ensuring long-term utility performance for the community.
