The Andhra Pradesh government has officially initiated a groundbreaking project to establish a massive drone delivery network. By signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Bengaluru-based aerospace firm Airbound, the state aims to facilitate up to 10,000 drone flights daily. This ambitious project is set to transform logistics across the Amaravati Capital Region, focusing on the efficient transport of vital medical supplies, commercial products, and other essential items.
Building a Scalable Drone Delivery Network
This strategic partnership between the Andhra Pradesh Drone Corporation (APDC) and Airbound marks a significant step toward positioning the state as a prominent global hub for drone technology. The agreement was formalized by APDC Managing Director and Chairman Geetanjali Sharma and Airbound CEO Naman Pushp, in the presence of Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu. The project, titled the Amaravati Capital Region Drone Delivery Network (ACR DDN), will initially link Amaravati, Vijayawada, and Guntur before expanding across the state.
A key feature of this network is the use of Airbound’s proprietary blended-wing-body tailsitter aircraft. Constructed from lightweight carbon fiber, each drone weighs just 1.5 kg and boasts an impressive payload-to-weight ratio of 1.5:1. This advanced engineering is expected to reduce delivery costs by as much as 20 times compared to traditional logistics methods. The initiative intends to create a shared, scalable aerial infrastructure, allowing for direct package movement between destinations.
Boosting Innovation and Logistics Infrastructure
The rollout of this drone delivery network will follow a phased approach, starting with pilot operations and route mapping in Guntur. This project is not merely about transportation; it aims to generate employment, foster local ecosystem development, and provide vast investment opportunities. Airbound brings substantial experience to this venture, having already successfully executed over 1,000 healthcare-related drone flights with Narayana Health in Bengaluru, alongside a total of 10,000 successful test flights.
Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu highlighted that this collaboration showcases India's indigenous prowess in next-generation aviation. By leveraging local technology, the state is creating a sustainable model for connectivity and economic growth. Officials noted that the project will lay the groundwork for a sophisticated logistics architecture, making Andhra Pradesh an ideal testing ground for future-ready aerial services.
