Air India is facing financial strain due to rising fuel prices and taxes, leading to a significant increase in flight costs. A rise in ATF prices and global oil supply disruptions have compounded the problem, affecting both domestic and international travel. The airline will introduce three phases of fuel surcharge, starting March 12, 2023.

Air India Raises Flight Costs Amidst Global Fuel Prices

Highlights

  • Air India announced a 40% surcharge on fuel costs effective from March 12, 2023.
  • The increase is due to global oil supply disruptions and excise duty on ATF in metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai.
  • The surcharge does not apply to pre-booked flights and Air India Express.
  • The announcement raises concerns about the financial health of air travel in India.

Following a recent increase in LPG prices in the country, air travel has become increasingly unaffordable for many Indians, making Air India's fuel surcharge announcement all the more concerning. On Tuesday, Tata Group-owned Air India announced a rise in domestic and international flights' fuel surcharges, citing the rise in jet fuel (ATF) prices as the primary cause. The surge in ATF costs, which now accounts for approximately 40% of the airline's operational costs, began in March and has resulted in a significant increase in overall costs.

Fuel prices have risen globally due to disruptions in the Gulf oil supply, and in India, the addition of tax and VAT on ATF further complicates the situation, increasing the cost for airlines. Concerned about the financial health of flights from being rendered loss-making, Air India announced that the fuel surcharge would be introduced in three phases, starting from March 12.

Initially, a surcharge of Rs 399 will be applied to domestic flights and flights within SAARC countries. For West Asia/Middle East, there's a $10 increase, and for South-East Asia and Africa, the price ranges will increment from $60 to $90. Importantly, the surcharge will not affect pre-booked tickets unless passengers change their travel plans. This announcement adds to the challenges faced by airlines and affects the overall accessibility of air travel for the masses.

Air India issued a statement acknowledging that the rise in fuel costs had forced them to implement these changes, even though they regret such a decision. The airline highlighted these adjustments as necessary to ensure its survival and to mitigate further losses. The news has not only raised concerns about the cost of travel but has also underscored the interconnectedness of global economic factors and their immediate impact on Indian commuters and travelers alike.
