The Consumer Affairs Ministry of India is gearing up to revolutionize the country's quality standards with the use of artificial intelligence, aiming for machine-readable and dynamic regulations. At an event organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), Secretary Nidhi Khare shed light on how the government plans to leverage emerging technologies like AI to modernize its regulatory ecosystem.

Machine-readable standards, or SMART (Standard Machine Accessible, Readable and Transferable) formats, will be key. These digital rules ensure automatic compliance verification, reducing manual intervention in industries. SMART standards are not only static but also dynamically updated as per industry needs, making them a vital tool for modern regulatory practices.

Transforming Standards Ecosystem

The secretary highlighted that India is at what might be termed a 'transformative moment' in its economic journey. Quality assurance will play a crucial role in realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which focuses on holistic development and improvement.

Khare also suggested that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) would change from regulatory agency to facilitator, encouraging more private sector involvement in testing infrastructure. This transition aims at promoting industrial expansion while maintaining consumer trust through quicker and more accurate testing methods.

She emphasized the importance of industry participation in standards formulation, stating that collaborative efforts between government agencies and industries can lead to better outcomes for all stakeholders involved.

"Quality is not just a pathway to development; it is also a destination in itself," Khare concluded. This quote underscores the government's commitment to embedding quality into every facet of industry operations.
