In a significant move to enhance farmer income security, the Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) recently hosted a key summit in Hyderabad. The event served as a platform for experts and stakeholders to address the evolving challenges facing the agricultural sector, specifically regarding the expansion of paddy cultivation, rising production levels, and the complexities of current procurement and storage systems.
Addressing Farmer Income Security and Procurement Challenges
The discussions during the summit highlighted how an over-reliance on full-scale government procurement has inadvertently reduced the participation of private traders and exporters. Experts warned that this trend could potentially squeeze market supply and lead to increased rice prices for consumers. Consequently, agricultural leaders at the summit emphasized the urgent need for a shift in policy, advocating for a more balanced regulatory framework that supports transparent procurement processes rather than depending solely on government intervention.
To improve farmer income security, participants strongly recommended that the government prioritize incentives for alternative crops. Promoting the cultivation of pulses, coarse cereals, and oilseeds was identified as a strategic necessity to diversify agricultural output. Furthermore, the experts stressed the importance of investing in value addition and by-product processing across various crop types to boost overall profitability for farmers. Prof. Aldas Janayya, the Vice-Chancellor of PJTSAU, confirmed that the university is committed to facilitating further consultations to design a comprehensive technical roadmap for submission to the government.
Strategic Collaboration for Rural Development
In addition to the policy summit, a pivotal development occurred when the university signed a memorandum of understanding with the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), also based in Hyderabad. This partnership aims to bridge the gap between academic research and practical management in the agricultural sector. Prof. Janayya, alongside university registrar Dr. G.E. Ch. Vidyasagar and ASCI secretary Dr. O.P. Singh, formalized the agreement, which will focus on capacity building and human resource training.
The collaboration will address critical areas such as modern governance practices, entrepreneurship, and effective management systems for rural development. By combining the agricultural expertise of PJTSAU with the management proficiency of ASCI, the initiative seeks to create sustainable solutions that directly benefit the farming community. As the university continues to finalize its technical recommendations, this academic-institutional partnership marks a proactive step toward stabilizing the rural economy and ensuring long-term prosperity for farmers through data-driven and modernized agricultural practices.
