8th Pay Commission DA Update: April 2026 DA Announced Possible
Despite preliminary anticipation that the January 2026 DA hike announcement would occur in early March, no official notification has yet been made. The government usually announces a DA increase around significant festivals and bases it on AICPI-IW data to provide workers with an inflation buffer.

Highlights
- •The potential for an upcoming January 2026 dearness allowance (DA) hike announcement is gaining traction as we approach the midpoint of March 2026, suggesting a DA increase could be imminent and around a 2% level as per AICPI-IW data.
- •Historical trends show that DA hikes often occur in late March or early April, with previous hikes taking place closer to major public holidays such as Holi (March) and Diwali (November).
- •The January 2026 announcement could significantly impact millions of central government employees' salaries, potentially increasing their base salary by Rs 600 per month for those earning around Rs 30,000.
- •With no official announcement yet made, anticipation lingers among affected workers and the public, highlighting the significance of timely DA hikes in addressing inflation.
The anticipation for the dearness allowance (DA) hike for January 2026 continued, with millions of central government employees eagerly awaiting the announcement. The government typically reveals DA hikes around significant festivals like Holi or Diwali, which could indicate a positive outlook in early March.
However, no official announcement has been made so far even as we are already halfway through March. DA increases occur twice a year, with January and July as the intervals. The latest hike is determined based on the 12-month average of the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW), which provides workers with an inflation buffer.
Historically, DA announcements have occurred in late March or early April. For example, the January 2025 hike was revealed on March 28, while the July 2024 hike was announced on March 12.
The trend seems to favor festival seasons for DA hikes, with the latest announcement typically falling around Diwali (November) or close after a major public holiday. Considering this pattern and given that we have already crossed the midpoint of March, there's an increasing likelihood that the January 2026 hike will be announced soon.
The anticipated hike is pegged at about 2% based on AICPI data, potentially bringing the current 58% DA to around 60%. Any such increase would impact employees' salaries as they represent a percentage of their basic salary. For instance, an employee with a basic salary of Rs 30,000 could see approximately Rs 600 more per month.
