8th Pay Commission: Central Employees May See Significant Hike
Central government employees are eagerly awaiting the recommendations from the eighth pay commission, which could lead to a substantial rise in salaries for level-1 workers by Rs 36k. The fitment factor plays a crucial role in determining these adjustments, with experts expecting it to be set between 3 and 3.25 this time.

Highlights
- •Eighth pay commission may recommend salary hikes by early 2028
- •Fitment factor will determine the extent of these increases
- •Central government employees could see significant hikes, from Rs 18k to Rs 75k based on current assumptions
- •Government aims for fitment factor between 3.0 and 3.25 during this period
The eighth pay commission is expected to present its recommendations in about 18 months. This development has generated considerable anticipation among central government employees, who may see substantial salary hikes.
Understanding the Fitment Factor
The Role of the Fitment Formula
The fitment formula determines the extent to which salaries are adjusted based on various factors like dearness allowance (DA) and growth rate. The fitment factor, typically 3-3.25 in recent pay commissions, has historically ranged from 1:12 under the sixth pay commission.
In a recent statement, Manjeet Singh Patel of All India NPS Employees Federation suggested that if the DA increases to 70%, with a current rate of 58%, there could be significant changes. If the growth factor stands at around 24%, the overall impact on salaries will also vary based on the number of family units considered.
Example: Assuming a fitment factor of 3, a level-1 employee's salary would increase from Rs 18,000 to Rs 54,000, an anticipated hike of Rs 36,000. Similarly, for a level-18 employee starting at Rs 250,000, the new maximum might reach Rs 750,000 by January 2026.
‘The exact impact will depend on these numbers, but central government employees can expect significant adjustments. The fitment factor is key in determining how much each employee's salary might increase,’ said Patel.
